This has happened at United before': José Mourinho plays down limp exit

José Mourinho attempted to play down the significance of Manchester United’s exit from the Champions League as former players turned television pundits savaged his side’s limp display against Sevilla. Rio Ferdinand described the performance as lethargic and added that Alexis Sánchez looked a shadow of his former self while Paul Scholes called for the Chilean to be dropped. Clutching desperately at the thinnest of straws, Mourinho suggested United had no time for self-recrimination because they had an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Brighton coming up at the weekend. “I don’t want to make a drama out of this defeat. It’s not the end of the world. It’s football and we have another match on Saturday,” the United manager said.

“I know this has happened at Manchester United before because I have sat in this chair as manager of Porto and of Real Madrid. I don’t think it is something new for this club.”

Dylan Hartley and Elliot Daly given 24 hours to prove England fitness

Dylan Hartley and Elliot Daly have been given an extra 24 hours in their efforts to prove their fitness to face Ireland on Saturday after England named a bloated squad for their final Six Nations match.

Hartley and Daly are progressing from calf and foot injuries respectively but face a race against time as England seek to avoid three consecutive Six Nations defeats for the first time since 2006. England traditionally name a squad of 25 four days before a match – the 23-man squad and two reserves – but have taken the decision to retain 29 players for Wednesday’s training session. Hartley and Daly will be further assessed before Eddie Jones cuts his squad again on Wednesday night.

Jones has already said Hartley – his captain for all but two of his 27 Tests in charge – will come back into the side if he is declared fit but is keeping his options open with Jamie George and Luke Cowan-Dickie also retained. Daly, meanwhile, has undergone a scan on his foot after he was seen wearing a protective boot on Monday.

Edin Dzeko sends Roma through against Shakhtar and into last eight

Roma are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2008 after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in their second-leg tie at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to a magnificent finish by Edin Dzeko, which sent them through on the away goal they scored in a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

Roma celebrated only their second win in six meetings with the Ukrainian side and got revenge for a 6-2 aggregate defeat by them at the same stage of the competition in 2011, although they endured a nervy finish.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg, Roma looked bereft of ideas for much of the contest before Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute following a tepid first half devoid of goalmouth action.

Manchester United: their top five worst Champions League displays

Manchester United’s return to the European Cup was fiercely anticipated – they had been away since 1969. After winning the Cup Winners’ Cup immediately after the return of English clubs to continental competition, in those crazy altruistic and naive days when that was what was done, they were expected to have a suitable go at the Champions League. But in place at the time was a rule limiting the number of foreigners that could be fielded by each club, and though United’s squad was largely British and Irish, the restriction applied to all who were either born outside of England, or were not considered “assimilated”.

Does MLS really promote flashier clubs over less glamorous ones?

There are few better in world soccer at marketing its own product than Major League Soccer. North America’s top flight has exploited, to a certain extent, a market many always believed to be there. But while MLS does a good job of selling itself, what duty does it have to sell each individual club in the division?

This was a question prompted by findings published on Twitter this week illustrating the number of times MLS’s official Twitter account has mentioned each and every club in 2018. It showed Los Angeles FC to be the most mentioned MLS team over the past two months, with the Portland Timbers somewhat surprisingly the least mentioned. The New York Red Bulls were the most retweeted, with the New England Revolution the least.

Tottenham apologise for survey asking if ‘a woman’s place is in the home’

Tottenham have apologised after a “wholly unacceptable” question asking whether “a woman’s place is in the home” found its way into a survey sent to fans in the United States.

Posts on social media emerged from Spurs supporters in the US revealing they had received a club email on Tuesday with the subject heading: “Calling all US Spurs fans: tell us what you think.”

A screen-grab of the email, complete with a club crest at the top, said: “We have an ongoing commitment to learn more about the specific requirements of our loyal fans and everyone who interacts with the club. Therefore, we’re seeking your help to increase our understanding of what you think about Spurs and football/sport in general.”
